Motifs/Patterns: This handloom Dhakai jamdani saree is woven in a mesmerising pink and purple dual tone — two colours interlaced in the warp and weft so that the fabric shifts between a vibrant magenta pink and a deep royal purple depending on the angle and the light. The sheer ground makes this colour play even more dynamic, with the purple deepening where the fabric layers and the pink glowing where it catches light. It is a colour combination that feels both festive and regal, alive with energy.
The body is richly worked with an all-over pattern of jamdani butis — alternating between zari butis that catch the light with metallic shimmer and hot pink thread butis that pop vividly against the purple-pink ground. Small zari squares are scattered between the larger floral butis, adding a secondary layer of sparkle across the entire surface.
The pallu is grand and unmistakably Dhakai. Dense, large-scale geometric jamdani motifs — bold chevrons, architectural jaal patterns, and angular floral forms — are woven in a combination of golden zari and hot pink thread work across the purple ground. The golden zari coverage on the pallu is generous and luminous, with the hot pink thread punctuating the metallic expanse with bursts of colour. A band of golden zari pin stripes transitions the body into the pallu, and the overall effect is opulent and celebratory — a pallu designed to drape with unmistakable impact.
Border Details: The border carries a double band of golden zari work with hot pink thread work woven in between, creating a dense, ornamental edging that frames the saree with layered richness. The selvedge is finished in a hot pink contrast edging with fine golden zari linings running through it — a bright, saturated line that sharpens the saree's overall presence.
Special Techniques: Dhakai jamdani is one of the oldest and most celebrated forms of handloom weaving, originating from the Dhaka region. This is a half silk Dhakai jamdani — woven with a silk warp and a cotton weft, producing a fabric that carries silk's sheen and colour vibrancy on the surface while the cotton weft lends it a lighter, more breathable quality and a subtle crispness in the drape. What distinguishes Dhakai jamdani is the needle technique — the artisan uses a hand needle to individually interlace each supplementary weft thread into the ground fabric, placing every motif with freehand precision as the weaving progresses row by row. There is no jacquard, no punch card, no mechanical pattern guide. The weaver works from memory or a hand-drawn graph placed beneath the warp, building each buti, each chevron, each jaal element thread by thread directly into the sheer ground. The needle allows for exact placement with minimal thread waste on the reverse, producing motifs that are crisp and clean on both sides of the fabric. In a saree this densely worked — with all-over butis on the body, layered borders, and a heavy pallu — the needle technique demands extraordinary patience and skill, as every single motif across the entire six yards is placed by hand. It is this uncompromising handwork that gives Dhakai jamdani its legendary status in the world of handloom textiles.
