Motifs/Patterns: This handloom pure silk by silk Chanderi saree is woven in a light ivory — a soft, warm tone with gentle off-white undertones that give the fabric a quiet, pearlescent quality. It is not a stark white; the ivory carries just enough warmth to feel organic and flattering, while the sheer Chanderi ground lets light pass through in a way that makes the colour appear to shift subtly between creamy and silvered depending on what sits beneath it.
The body is scattered with small jamdani-style leaf butis across the entire surface, alternating between golden zari and silver zari — each tiny motif catching the light differently, gold warm and silver cool, creating a subtle dual-toned shimmer against the ivory ground.
The pallu is breathtaking. Dense rows of parrot motifs in golden and silver zari fill the pallu surface — larger in scale than the border parrots, arranged in flowing horizontal bands that create a luminous tapestry of metallic birds and botanical forms against the sheer ivory ground. Leaf and floral elements in zari are interspersed between the parrots, and red thread accents on the beaks continue the detail from the border. A band of red and silver pinstripes transitions the body into the pallu. The overall effect is celebratory and unmistakably grand — a pallu designed to drape as a statement piece.
Border Details: The bottom border is richly layered: a broad silver zari band runs along the selvedge, finished with a deep red edging on one side and a yellow edging on the other. Above this silver zari band sits a stunning double row of parrot motifs — woven alternately in golden zari and silver zari — facing each other in pairs, their forms detailed with the characteristic hatched texture of hand-woven work. Small red thread accents mark their beaks, adding a vivid, lifelike touch of colour to the metallic birds. The top border carries the same broad silver zari band with the red and yellow edging but without the parrot motifs, keeping the upper selvedge cleaner and more restrained.
Special Techniques: Chanderi silk by silk is among the finest weaves from the Chanderi region of Madhya Pradesh. The term "silk by silk" means that both the warp and the weft are woven in pure silk — as opposed to silk-cotton Chanderi where the warp is silk and the weft is cotton. This produces a fabric that is entirely silk: sheer, lightweight, and fluid, with a consistent lustre on both sides. This is a yarn-dyed saree — the ivory hue is dyed into the silk threads before they meet the loom, embedding the colour into the fibre's structure. The zari butis on the body and the elaborate parrot motifs on the border and pallu are woven directly into the silk ground during the weaving process, with the weaver introducing golden zari, silver zari, and red thread as supplementary weft elements to build each motif row by row. The parrot motifs — with their dual metallic tones and coloured beak accents — demand particular precision, as the weaver must switch between multiple threads within a single motif to achieve the alternating gold and silver effect. It is this meticulous handwork on a fabric this delicate that gives Chanderi its reputation as one of India's most refined handloom traditions.
